Lead Technician (2016-2017)

I started working at the Cabaret Theater on Emerson College’s campus in 2016. Starting as a Theater Technician, I worked on many theater, comedy, and musical performances that would occur in our space. Eventually, in 2017, I became one of the Lead Technicians and helped re-design our audio and lighting systems when we moved to a new space.

As a technician, I had to be prepared to help set up and strike any production that occurred in the theater. This meant that I would work with lighting designers in order to set up lights and record cues, audio designers in order to set levels for sound effects, scenic designers in order to help dress the set, as well as help assist with any other problems the production ran into. I also needed to be able to troubleshoot the various aspects of the theater, whether that was replacing the bulb in a broken lighting instrument or following the signal path in the audio system to find where a signal might be dropping.
The EVVY Awards
Audio Manager (2014-2018)

I started working on The EVVY Awards, an annual awards show run at Emerson College, during 2014 as the Assistant Audio Manager on their 34th show. Continuing the same role for the 35th show, I then finished in 2018 as one of the Audio Managers for both the 36th and 37th show. This show is the largest student-produced, multi-camera, live-switch production in the US with a team of over 200+ students. As both a live-broadcasted show and a theatrical performance, this show taught me how to manage numerous things at once, and how to see a production through from start to finish.

As an Audio Manager, it was my job to work with other departments during pre-production to make sure that all engineering aspects for the show were accounted and budgeted for, that any sound effects performances were designed and recorded, and that the audio team was appropriately staffed up.
During the production itself, I was in charge of leading both the in-house and broadcast teams. This meant that I was responsible for tasking the team and clearing up any uncertainties that we encountered, such as coordinating wireless frequencies for our mics or setting up our in-house and broadcast systems without getting in any other team’s way.

Although these samples are in the theater section, both examples of my work below required multiple setups for the same performance: one for the auditorium and one for broadcast/tape.
The EVVY Awards
Audio Manager
As an audio manager for both the 36th and 37th awards, it was my job to design the system we used as efficiently as possible, work with a budget in mind, and hire a team that I knew could benefit the production. This culminated in the final production, where I managed both the in-house and broadcast audio teams, helping solve any issues that blocked them from being able to focus on their work.

Audio Manager
As audio manager for both the first and second season, I largely got to dictate how to do things for future seasons as well. Although it was a fairly simple setup, mostly only having one mic for the comedian as well as some audience mics, getting everything ready and organized was anything but. As this had never been attempted in the space that the performance was in, there were always a myriad of technical issues that would occur on the day of the show. Luckily, however, I was able to solve everything so the show could go on.
